There Is Always Something Better

As consumers, it's only natural that we constantly seek out something better than the products that we already have.  Especially in the case of communication, we keep striving for something that is faster and more efficient, even when we can't quite understand the amazing abilities that our current networks have.  In truth, we're kind of boggled still by the things that our 3G networks and WiFi can do.  It hasn't been too long at all since coffee shops and restaurants began offering WiFi, which allowed us to get out of the house while still remaining connected.  There is no doubt, either, that our cellular phone networks just continue to get better and better.  So why, with the advances in technology that we have already made in this third generation of wireless communication, are we still holding out for faster and stronger?

It's a good thing that businesses make it their mission to figure out what the public wants before we even know it, and work to provide us with the very best technology that is available.  While we're still reveling in the third generation of wireless communication and all of the freedom that it offers, the fourth generation has been in the works.

This 4G network, along with WiMAX, promises us speeds that we've never before experienced, as well as the ability to transmit greater amounts of data than ever before.  In addition, the range of any one 4G network is said to be up to four miles, even in urban areas.  The coolest thing about that is that whole cities will soon be wireless Internet hotspots with just a few strategically placed cell towers.  If we think that we're free to roam with our laptops now, imagine what it will be like to surf the Internet from the park or the grocery store parking lot?

If you happen to live in one of the cities that is currently taking 4G and WiMAX for a test drive, then you already have this amazing technology in your backyard.  You'll need a few things to get started, and the first is a subscriber unit, or a WiMAX gateway.  These will effectively harness the WiMAX signal for your home or laptop computer.  There are already several different models of subscriber units from which to choose, depending on your individual needs.

Your first choice is an indoor model that is meant to be placed close to a window.  These are effective if you live close to the cell tower that is transmitting the WiMAX signal.  This WiMAX gateway is about the size of your current Internet router, but there are no wires required.  If you live further away from the cell tower, you can still benefit from the signal.  You will, however, need the outdoor model that must be professionally installed on the roof of your home.  For those that choose to use laptops, you can have the subscriber unit embedded into your laptop, or you can purchase a USB dongle.  With any one of these WiMAX gateways, you're ready to join the fourth generation.
